Southwark Street Colourful Crossings
Funded initially through Transport for London's Future Streets Incubator Fund, Colourful Crossings has become an annual commission bringing colour and animation to Southwark Street in the heart of Bankside. Building on the success of our Crossing Stories, and Performer installations, in 2016 artist Camille Walala was commissioned in 2016 to create a design for the second year 'Colourful Crossing' as part of London Design Festival.
Bringing her trademark graphic style of bold colours and shapes, Camille Walala teamed up with specialist road markings company Pre-formed Markings and Geveko on the commission. Launched during London Design Festival in 2016, the crossing is still in situ for all to enjoy.
2017 sees artist Thierry Noir bring his signature style to Bankside. Keep your eyes peeled for his new crossing due to be installed over the weekend of 16 and 17 September to link with London Design Festival 2017.
Evaluation from the Colourful Crossings delivered to date have found that nearly 70% people felt happier as a result of the creative project, and 85% wanted to see more creative projects along Southwark Street. Both projects have been part funded by Transport for London, through a programme that helps to rebalance the movement and place functions of London's streets.
