Bankside and London Bridge are being transformed.
To help coordinate and facilitate developments, and also to mitigate the impact of this construction process on the local community, Bankside and London Bridge Logistics Group (BLBLG) was set up in 2009 to foster cooperation between developers, contractors and stakeholders while these major projects are under way. Smaller projects can also join the group.
The group’s twin objectives are to coordinate and communicate the work of its members, and this is achieved through a close working partnership between the private and public sector development projects and two key stakeholders, London Borough of Southwark (LBS) and the Business Improvement District for Bankside, Better Bankside, who co-chair the group.
The group also works with the local and wider community, including monitoring local employment targets, helping deliver cyclist safety awareness training and supporting community and arts events such as MERGE, the local immersive arts festival. BLBLG’s achievements have also been recognised in the Mayor’s BIDs Award for Best Partnership in 2010.
The value of having to the group to the local community is clear from positive feedback, from both residents and businesses. The emerging neighbourhood development plan for Bankside also recognises the importance of a coordinated approach to development in a neighbourhood where so many people live, work and visit.
As new projects come on-stream it is important that they also contribute to, and benefit from, this coordination, communication and support for community development.
