Explore the fascinating history of Bankside through this tour of its favourite drinking holes. Whether they were called an alehouse, an inn, a tavern or a pub, they have always been at the heart of the community. Here people through the ages have come together to celebrate, commiserate or simply to leave their cares behind for a few hours.

Led by a Blue Badge Guide, our walk takes us to the site of the inn that inspired Geoffrey Chaucer to write The Canterbury Tales, a former coaching inn where travelling theatre troupes like Shakespeare’s performed, and the tavern from where Samuel Pepys watched as the Great Fire of London engulfed the city across the river. Along the way we’ll discover how Bankside became the place to party in centuries past.

Meet outside Menier Chocolate Factory at 6pm for a prompt start. There will be a few stops for drinks as we go, and you're welcome to stay at the end for drinks with your colleagues (we'll end at The Anchor Bankside).
