Bankside Skills Academy

Help local young people learn skills and build their confidence to boost their chances of employment
18 Great Guildford Street
Rachel Nicholson
Corporate Responsibility Manager

The Bankside Skills Academy is an innovative work experience programme designed to give young people in Southwark unprecedented access to the expertise and knowledge of a wide range of businesses.

Every summer, a small group of enthusiastic 16-21 year olds who live or study in Southwark are given the opportunity to spend the summer working side-by-side with members of the Bankside business community to improve not only their practical skills such as CV writing, interview skills, time management and communications but also boost their confidence, resilience and professionalism in the real world of work.

In 2019, over 20 local organisations and more than 70 volunteers supporting the Bankside Skills Academy students through a series of skills development workshops, office tours, insight days, mock interview activities and exclusive Bankside experiences, as well as helping them to organise a professional networking event at the end of the programme.  By the end of the summer, 100% of the students said they had learned new skills and 91% felt challenged by the programme. One of the aims of the Bankside Skills Academy is to help young people learn more about different businesses and sectors, and the wide variety of roles within these. At the beginning of the programme, only 42% of the students agreed that they had a good understanding of different roles within a sector or business, but by the end of their time with us, this had increased to 100%.

The Bankside Skills Academy will return in 2020.
