Bankside Boardwalk

We trialled a new modular boardwalk on a street with narrow pavements to expand the area of public space.

Better Bankside successfully secured funding from Transport for London’s Future Streets Incubator Fund to design and pilot a temporary boardwalk structure on Lavington Street in Bankside, a busy street, often used as a rat run by traffic.

The experimental project, trialled a temporary one way operation of the street, which freed up carriageway for the boardwalk structure – widening narrow pavements to allow more space for people on foot, with buggies or in wheelchairs.

The colourful boardwalk incorporated planting and enabled a safe cycle contraflow along the temporary one-way operation of Lavington Street.

Bankside Boardwalk was designed by Steer, manufactured by Trueform.  Works on site were overseen by Southwark Highways and Maylims.
