The Hope Exchange
Better Bankside, working with local business Forster Communications, and artists Nicolas Henniger, Sara Muzio and Gonzague Lacombe from Collectif Exyzt, have transformed a former grot spot along the street into a vibrant and verdant public space.
The Hope Exchange, a spruced up public space on Southwark Street by its junction with Thrale St, sets the scene of many exchanges, it is a place to trade ideas and recount stories, to share a coffee, meet new people, the beginning or middle of a journey. Or, simply, it is a place to pause.
Positioned in the centre of Bankside’s patchworked community, the colourful pattern on the ground references the decorative floor tiles in the atrium of the Hop Exchange building just under the rail bridge, while birch trees in pots help give a sense of enclosure and shelter from the traffic along one of Bankside’s busiest streets.
The project is part of a longer term initiative to improve spaces and places in Bankside through working with artists and creative businesses.
