Better Bankside is proud to award this organisation with a Bankside Star.

Bankside Stars are extraordinary organisations that are actively involved with the local area. Find out more here

They earned their Bankside Star by:

Mediaocean has teamed up with Lucy Brown House a sheltered and retirement housing organisation for older people, run by the London Borough of Southwark. Our aim was always to partner with a local charity, so that we could help make a difference to our community. Together over the last year we have organised and participated in a wide selection of activities for the residents as well as for Mediaocean staff to get involved in and enjoy. These have ranged from craft evenings, bingo afternoons, a gardening day to regular monthly IT surgery clinics.

Mediaocean has also been involved in the Lucy Brown House Christmas Party by providing entertainment during the night and a selection of international foods to go with the theme. Through an internal raffle draw we have also been able to raise enough funds for the residents to purchase a barbecue for the communal garden and a table tennis table.

How many people in your organisation got involved? We open up all activities to the entire office and usually we find that different employees get involved depending on their skills and the activity that is in question.

What did you get out of this experience? The activities we have run so far have helped our staff engage and build relationships with people in the community that they may not normally reach out to. They have also provided our staff with the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills and feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that they have been put to good use.

How did you find out about/get involved in this? We first heard of Lucy Brown House through Better Bankside, who helped us better understand which charities or organisations we could partner with in the local community. Lucy Brown House was one of a number of opportunities presented to us by Better Bankside, who also facilitated the introduction.

Why did you get involved? Mediaocean tries to support charities that are close to our employee’s hearts but we also wanted to do something for the local community, where we could see the difference locally.

Has your organisation done any volunteering before?  Normally employees at Mediaocean have the option to take a day off to pursue philanthropy work with a charity of their choice. Last year we also got involved in a local community project, which involved building a hostel in the nearby area. This year we wanted to work with a charity on an ongoing basis throughout the year and teaming up with Lucy Brown House has provided us with that opportunity.

What other types of volunteering might you like to get involved with in the future? We regularly review the charitable activities Mediaocean engages in, and a big focus for us continues to revolve around supporting local organisations. This year however, as a technology company we are also starting to focus on supporting various initiatives around the topic of ‘Women in Technology’ and so it would be fantastic to support a local organisation that helps empower young girls into STEM based subjects and roles.

Would you recommend other Banksiders to consider volunteering? Bankside is a diverse community, and not just a business environment, it’s important to recognise this. I would encourage other business in the area to get involved through Better Bankside and help support the community on various projects and initiatives in order to make this a better place for everyone.
