Plan Zheroes helps to tackle food waste by connecting businesses with surplus food to charities that need it, solving two problems with one solution. They have worked in partnership with Borough Market since 2014 to collect unsold world-class food from traders and redistribute it to local charities. The Market trades Tuesday to Sunday, and Plan Zheroes are there every day, and have contributed to the equivalent of half a million meals being donated to good causes, saving it from ending up in landfill.
Opportunities to get involved
- Volunteers are needed every day at Borough Market, with opportunities to get involved as an individual or as a small team. At the end of the trading day, you’ll join experienced volunteers to visit traders in the market and collect surplus produce. This is then weighed and sorted in Plan Zheroes’ collection area, ready for local charities to collect. Up to four people can join each session, but with collections happening six days a week, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved as a one-off or as part of their community of regular volunteers.
