Plan Zheroes - The Zero Food Waste Heroes
Everybody knows we waste way too much food. In the UK, it’s about 15 million tonnes per year and in many cases this food is perfectly good to eat.
Plan Zheroes is a registered charity that inspires businesses to donate their surplus food to other charities and community groups via its free online platform. Using their Food Map, charities can find and connect with local food businesses by receiving email notifications when donations are posted, ready for click and collection.
This platform allows charities to improve the quality of the food they offer their beneficiaries, save money on their food budget and rescue good food that would otherwise have gone to waste. Here in Bankside, both businesses and community groups have already benefited from the scheme.
Tina Johnston, Coordinator for Older Peoples’ Services at Blackfriars Settlement said, ‘Since joining Plan Zheroes project, we save money every week from our shopping list, while serving nutritious and tasty meals and healthy snacks for our members.’
Borough Market are already involved, donating surplus food from the market as well as hosting their free 'Disco Soup' events.
Ways to get involved:
- Donate surplus food from your organisation
- Volunteer to distribute food to the charities
- If you are a charity register your interest in receiving food donations
