Shakespeare's Globe are now recruiting for volunteers to join their team for their 2017 Summer Season. Interviews will take place in January, training will be throughout February and March, and their season starts in April 2017.

This role description has been designed to give you the full details about the role, to help you decide whether it is the right fit for you.

Attached are the Application Form and Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form, which both need to be completed and sent back to volunteer [at] (subject: Volunteer%20Steward) by Monday 9th January 2017.

If candidates are successful at this point, the next stage will be an informal interview, which will take place in the new year.

People volunteer with Shakespeare's Globe for all sorts of reasons; from wanting to open up your social circle and make new friends, to gaining valuable experience to put on your CV, wanting to make a contribution to our arts charity, or perhaps to learn more about theatre and Shakespeare. It is an exciting, vibrant place to volunteer where every day brings new visitors, new challenges and that infectious buzz as the performance starts!

As a Volunteer Steward you will get to welcome and interact with people from all over the world in the knowledge that you are making a valuable contribution to the charity.

The Role:

To act as the public face of Shakespeare’s Globe during their performances and events, ensuring that the visitors have a positive, enjoyable and safe experience.

  • Provide an excellent level of visitor care and engage with visitors during their visit
  • To act as a good ambassador for the Globe during all contact with visitors and engage with their Play Your Part visitor care training
  • Check tickets and show visitors to their seats
  • Sell programmes, rent cushions, seatbacks and blankets and promote other Globe products as necessary
  • Stand during the performance to make sure visitors are happy and safe
  • To answer visitor questions, queries and problems
  • Assist in emergency evacuations of the site (full training will be given)
  • Represent the Globe by wearing the Volunteer Steward uniform


Please note the minimum age requirement to become a Volunteer Steward is 18. 

Desirable Qualities:

  • A flair for engaging with the public
  • An interest in theatre, live events or the arts (or a willingness to learn)
  • Well presented, friendly and polite
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Language skills are useful (Shakespeare’s Globe welcome’s visitors from all over the world)
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Willing to take responsibility during an emergency evacuation and able to maintain a calm attitude during an incident

Volunteer Shifts:

Shakespeare’s Globe hope that you will be able to offer 2 shifts per-month during our Summer Season which runs from April 2017 – October 2017.

An average shift lasts approximately 4 hours with the start times as follows:

  • 1pm for a matinee performance
  • 6.30pm for an evening performance  (One hour earlier on Sundays)

As a volunteer steward you can claim travel expenses (up to £12.10) and a meal will be provided for you when you volunteer for 2 performances on one day. You will also receive the monthly volunteer steward newsletter, and be invited to volunteer social events throughout the year.  

Interviews will be in late January: applications must be received by Monday 9th January 2017


If your application and interview is successful you will be invited to an induction session, to welcome you to Shakespeare’s Globe. Shakespeare’s Globe will also give you full details of our Volunteer Agreement, Volunteer Policy, how you can claim travel expenses and the training we offer our volunteers.
