Now more than ever, it is important to try where we can to connect with nature, while staying safe at home. Being indoors for most of the time, it can be easy to become bored, anxious, stressed and agitated, and it is crucial to take time for ourselves and to do things to help us look after out mental wellbeing. They can also be fun mini projects to do with children.
Connecting with nature is a great way to ease anxiety and stress, feel more grounded and bring the outdoors in. Whether you have no outdoor space and just a window sill or kitchen counter, or a balcony, patio or large garden, there is hopefully something here you'll be able to enjoy.
1) Use your kitchen scraps
This one is great not only to minimise food waste, but also if you have minimal outdoors space. You can use seeds from a lemon or the stone of an avocado, or a piece of ginger for propagation. You can propagate an avocado stone with water and best of all you don't even need soil.
2) Spring clean your balcony, window sill or garden.
Now is a great time to tidy up your space whether it's weeding a patch of your garden or opening the windows wide and dusting off the sills. Tidy space, tidy mind!
3) Remove brown leaves from house plants and dust/wipes their leaves.
A layer of dust on the leaves of houseplants will block sunlight and reduce the plant's ability to photosynthesize. Make sure to give your house plants leaves a dust or a wipe with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free, shiny and healthy. Also remember to spritz or water your plants depending on their needs.
4) Take cuttings from your existing plants and propagate new plants from those.

5) Repot your overgrown plants
Plants tend to need repotting every 12-18 months and some tell-tale signs include:
- Roots growing through the drainage holes
- Roots pushing the plant up, out of the pot
- If your plant is growing slower than usual
- If your plant is overly top heavy, and easily tips over
- If your plant requires more frequent watering, and the soil dries up quickly
6) Create a mini herb or vegetable garden on your balcony, patio or in your kitchen.

7) Make a plan and do a little research
Having a little plan always helps. Especially as it takes time and patience for plants to grow. Map out the key stages of the plant life cycles and find out what you can plant at different times of the year. Spring is here so find out which seeds, plants and veggies are best to plant now for the best chance of success.
8) Have a sunflower growing competition
Coming up is the best time of year to sew and grow sunflowers. You could have a family competition and get your children involved too to see who can grow the tallest sunflower.
