Another great year for EmploySE1

EmploySE1 has enjoyed another great year supporting local businesses in recruiting local residents.

Over 70 employers registered in the last 12 months recruiting over 400 local staff. It has been another great year for the team.

During the first half of 2013 EmploySE1 expanded into Lambeth and VauxhallOne BID members could now register their vacancies on the site. This meant a lot more businesses and a larger pool of candidates. Within the first 6 months of expansion 250 vacancies were registered on the website. However, this was just a warm-up for things to come.

By midyear the team had been inundated with vacancies from businesses both in Lambeth and Southwark. They recruited for restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and various new businesses moving into SE1 & SE11.

“Businesses understand the benefits of local recruitment and it was clear the economy was starting to pick up by the sheer volume of business enquires” says Rutie Mupfurutsa, EmploySE1 Manager. “In October we recruited a new Coordinator Chris Elders, who is also a local resident. She has been tasked meet with local businesses, find out their recruitment needs and helping place the candidates into their positions.”

Hundreds of local residents have been interviewed for positions, in some cases walking distance from their home. Apart from being able to get into work easily, staff retention is normally higher with local employees. This has been evident in a lot of the local hotels who initially recruited for the Olympics through EmploySE1. In some cases 70% of staff recruited through the scheme are still working for the same employer a year after they started, which bucks all trends for employment in the hospitality industry.

In October team ran a series of events and initiatives as part of Employ Local Week 2013. The programme was supported by the four Business Improvement Districts. Better Bankside members were invited to promote their vacancies at a jobs fair at Mint Street Community Centre. The event was a great success and the team is looking to run Employ Local Week in 2014.

Now it’s almost Christmas and November has had the highest number of monthly small business registrations to date. As the team continues to talk to employers looking to recruit in 2014, EmploySE1 is set to continue its great success.

EmploySE1 is now supported by four Business Improvement Districts (BIDs); Team London Bridge, Better Bankside, Waterloo Quarter and Vauxhall One.
