Over a hundred items were re-homed at the Bankside Emporium on 8th March. Happy customers walked away with armloads of pre-loved clothes, DVDs, games, books and homewares at the pop-up swap shop run as part of Climate Week 2013. The bargain £1 entry entitled shoppers to a token they could exchange for any item of their choice. Donating items bought you more tokens to shop with, so the more you brought, the more you could swap.
Our favourite finds for the ladies were a pair of practically brand new brown leather boots and a gorgeous retro gold jacket. The BB staff thought it was so cool when it came in we were almost tempted to hide it! It wasn't just an event for the ladies, though. A few men were spotted browsing fab '80s vinyls, DVDs and PlayStation games and even enjoying some home-baked cake in aid of local community group Friends of Mini Mints.
As well as swapping a bargain, conscious consumers learned about upcycling and re-use from local re-skilling experts the Good Life Centre, who demonstrated how to re-upholster a chair live in our very own Community Space. Better Bankside's recycling providers First Mile were also on hand to explain local recycling services for businesses.
The 30 shoppers that came through our doors were keen to know when the next swap would be, so by popular demand the swap-shop will return on 5th July. Next time you're clearing out your cupboards, save the best things to bring to the Bankside Emporium and swap them for new stuff you'll love.
