Bankside Boardwalk installed on Lavington Street

Innovative project transforms street to support greater footfall
Valerie Beirne

A first for the UK, an innovative and colourful new streetscape has been installed on Lavington Street, expanding the narrow pedestrian walkway space and injecting playfulness into the urban realm.

The project was funded through Transport for London's Future Streets Fund to temporarily retune the street. The trial project implements an experimental one-way traffic operation on Lavington Street, and uses the road space freed up to extend narrow pavements using a specially commissioned modular 'boardwalk' structure.

The Bankside Boardwalk was designed by local transport and design consultancy Steer Davies Gleave, and built in West London by the award winning Trueform street furniture company.

The project is due to be on site for up to six months, during which Better Bankside will be analysing the impact of the project on users of the street. This is another groundbreaking pilot project from Better Bankside. If successful, the project will be rolled out in other areas of London.
