Supporting Banksiders to make the post lockdown transition from bus to bike
Amandeep Kellay
Sustainable Travel Manager

At Better Bankside we have always advocated the benefits of active and sustainable travel, and have delivered a range of initiatives to encourage people to walk and cycle more. We are already a community of cyclists, with 17% of Banksiders cycling to work, compared to the national average of 4%.

It is anticipated that cycling could increase ten-fold post lockdown. The Mayor of London has a bold new Streetscape plan to overhaul London's streets with transformation of London’s roads to be fast-tracked, giving space to new cycle lanes and wider pavements to enable social distancing.

If you are considering changing the way you travel to work, we have a range of initiatives to support the transition from bus to bike.

Brompton bike hire

Fancy trialling cycling to work? Before committing to buying a bike, take part in a free bike loan from Better Bankside. Experience healthy commuting using one of our Brompton folding bikes, easy to store at work or home.

Dr Bike

We host monthly Dr Bike sessions, a free bike maintenance service. Drop your bike off in the morning and collect in the afternoon.

Each session provides a basic servicing which will assess general roadworthiness of each bike, brake pads and brake cables, gears, alignment of wheels, tyres and inner tubes. Keep an eye on our events page for the next Dr Bike. Check the events pages for upcoming Dr Bike sessions.

From 12 June – 17 July 2020, Better Bankside and local bike servicers Nip Nip, based on Great Suffolk Street, will be offering free vouchers which give the user a general service at NipNip for the value of £25. Service includes checking and tuning of brake pads, cables, gears, wheels and tyres. Where necessary, brake pads and cables will be replaced at the discretion of the mechanic. Value of voucher may be redeemed in store for discount on higher value service. Voucher valid for one use and to be retained by bike shop.
