Following a sucessful pilot Better Bankside’s food recycling offer is to be expanded

With Better Bankside’s new recycling offer all food waste collected from the Bankside area will be used to generate heat and energy.

Following the completion of a sucessful food recycling pilot service all food waste collected by Better Bankside is now being taken to an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility recently opened in Dagenham. All food waste collected will be used to generate heat and energy. None will go to landfill or for incineration.

To sign up please contact Ben St George First Mile’s BIDs Manager on 0800 612 9894.

Better Bankside launched a food recycling pilot service in July 2012 through recycling provider First Mile. The aim of the pilot was to measure the demand for such a service in the Business Improvement District.

During the 12 month trial 16 businesses signed up and 24 tonnes of food was removed for recycling, mostly for composting. This client group was made up of 11 small offices, two medium sized offices, two coffee shops and one restaurant.

The service is subsidised by Better Bankside and we provide a 20% discount on the sacks purchased by businesses. This offer will continue under the next phase of the roll out from which we aim to have 60 businesses recycling their food waste by October 2014. A leaflet will be going to BID members over the next few weeks explaining how the service works.

In addition we have asked First Mile to contact all BID members who also use their general waste service to see if they wish to convert to the food recycling scheme. This will be provided at a cost lower than the general waste service.

Residual waste will continue to be removed as part of this service.
