Advice for businesses from the Metropolitan Police

In light of the pandemic, we’ve put together some useful resources to keep your business secure.

Security

If you are concerned for the security of your office or premises, the Met Police have released a document of crime prevention advice, including:

  • Reviewing your property portfolio
  • Access and boundary treatments
  • Prevent vehicular access on to the site
  • Surveillance
  • Forensic marking
  • Removing the utility supply
  • Protecting buildings within your site

Fire Safety and Prevention

London Fire Brigade are advising businesses to review their Fire Risk assessment and Emergency Plan in light of the impact of Covid-19 on your staffing levels, operating times, business processes and evacuation arrangements. The main areas to consider are:

Prevention

  • Appropriately fire risk assess and supervise maintenance operations and building works.
  • Review the impact of Covid-19 on maintenance provision on essential fixed installations for fire-fighters and potential ignition sources.
  • Prohibit all hot works.
  • For unoccupied buildings, ensure all electrical appliances are switched off and the plugs are removed from sockets

Protection

  • Securely close all fire doors
  • Ensure all security staff and any new or inexperienced security staff are familiar with the emergency plan and procedure for contacting the fire brigade

Home Fire Safety (working from home)

  • Ensure employees working from home take the time to fit, test and check smoke alarms in their homes
  • Ensure all family members know what to do if you have a fire, particularly elderly people and children.
  • At night, close doors, unplug appliances and chargers, check heaters are off and candles and cigarettes are properly extinguished.

Policing

Neighbourhood policing and proactive work in the community is continuing as normal. Your local teams are out on patrol dealing with anti-social behavior and criminality in their wards.
