11th – 15th March 2013 is National Apprenticeship week. The Skills People, who are based locally to Bankside, will be using this opportunity to highlight the huge benefit Apprenticeships can offer to your business, as well as sharing with you some wonderful success stories from the past year.
The Skills People at Lewisham and Southwark College work with many SME's (small and medium employers of 250 employees or less) in the borough of London as well as larger organisations including: The Ritz, Bluewater, Tate, Novotel, Melia Whitehouse Hotel and the Financial Ombudsman.
Partnering with businesses to provide training opportunities for new and existing staff in order to help businesses grow is at the heart of everything they do.
What their partners say…..
"It's great from a recruitment point of view, because it has made the kitchen staff aware of the opportunities for career progression, so we're becoming better at 'growing our own' team." Maureen Carter, Training Officer, London Borough of Greenwich
"One of the things we repeatedly hear from staff who participated in the training is that it was one of the best they ever attended. This was down to the way in which The Skills People quickly understood the business needs of the Council and were able to demonstrate how they help the Council tackle the number of complaints it was receiving." Graham Ward, Director of Customer Relations, London Borough of Bexley
“Our Account Manager has been a breath of fresh air. I genuinely believe that she has our best interests at heart” Liz Chasteauneuf, Gallions Housing Association
Research conducted by Populus on behalf of the national Apprenticeship Service* states that over 130,000 work places are currently feeling the positive effects of taking on Apprentices and have reported the following statistics:
• 77% of employers believe apprenticeships make them more competitive
• 83% of employers rely on their apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future.
• 88% believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce
And there are other benefits to the employer – funding is now available which means that SME’s can access the Employer Incentive £1500 grant per candidate for apprentices aged 16 – 24. The grant scheme has been extended until 31st December 2013 in order to encourage more employers to enter the scheme and is in addition to the training costs of the apprenticeship framework which are met in full for young people aged 16 – 18 and 50% for those aged 19 – 24. This is also applicable to existing members of staff who take up the training framework and not just new employees. More details can be found here.
