An exciting new contemporary dance programme for children and adults of all ages living in Lambeth and Southwark gets going this autumn as a result of a unique partnership between social enterprise Coin Street Community [CSCB] and leading British contemporary dance company Rambert.
CSCB has provided Rambert with a once in a lifetime opportunity to build its new headquarters and dance studios in the heart of London’s South Bank cultural quarter. In return for a commitment to deliver a significant community dance programme in the local area (and a rent of one pair of ballet shoes a year), CSCB made a site adjacent to the National Theatre available to Rambert.
Rambert’s new home, which completes in late September, is phase 1 of CSCB’s mixed use Doon Street scheme which also includes a public swimming and indoor sports centre, flats for sale, an education/office building, and a new town square adjacent to Waterloo Bridge.
"Dance is the fastest growing art form in this country and now second only to football in terms of popularity amongst young people" says Iain Tuckett, Coin Street’s Group Director. "It is fun and helps people of all ages stay healthier and feel good. We are delighted to bring this exceptional dance programme to our community.”
Rambert’s Head of Learning and Participation, Joce Giles, agrees: “We’re really excited to be working in partnership with Coin Street and are looking forward to developing our extensive, long-term community programme when we move into our new purpose built studios. We hope that the taster sessions will encourage local residents to come along and have a go and be inspired to continue dancing with Rambert in the future.”
The programme will include classes for a range of ages, levels and abilities. From ‘Mini Movers’ for 5-7 year olds focusing on having fun and enjoying a first experience of dance to ‘Level 3 Contemporary’ for more experienced dancers.
