As part of our ongoing Wellbeing@Work service, March saw Better Bankside hosting sleep and wellbeing experts on a seminar called How to Sleep Well.
Julia Chapman from the sleep clinic at NHS Guy's Hospital, spoke on sleep hygiene and the key reasons why people wake up unrefreshed in the morning. She enlightened us on the fact that the production of melotonin (the hormone needed for sleepiness) is completely suspended when the eyes are recieving the blue light spectrum present on laptops, tvs and mobile phone screens. Yet another reason to put your emails down long before you prepare for bed! She also spoke on the ideal sleeping environments and behaviours that are easily adopted to ensure that you sleep deeply in your precious sleeping hours. Listen below.
Richard Hillsdon from WPF Therapy, spoke on the importance of mental state on relaxation and insomnia. He convinced us that the it was important to think calmly about sleep, rather than allowing the mind to remain anxious whilst in bed despite us knowing that we will not act on any worries until the next day. His logical approach to thinking left us feeling reassured about night time worries. Listen below.
