Reframing the potential of the Victorian railway viaducts in Bankside, London Bridge and Bermondsey
The Low Line concept, conceived by a passionate local resident, is now steered by a group of like-minded partners who are reimagining the uses of the ancient railway viaduct which trundles through Bankside, London Bridge and Bermondsey.
The viaduct is the largest structure in the capital, already home to a variety of people, industries and activities. The Low Line will ensure that investment in the arches and adjacent sites contributes positively to the neighbourhoods and communities it spans.
Low Line projects already underway will:
- Create a green linear park connecting people and wildlife
- Improve connectivity and accessibility in the streets and spaces along its course
- Breathe new life into vacant and derelict arches and support economic activity, building local jobs and skills.
- Increase environmental resilience along its length.
The first new sections of the Low Line opened at Old Union Yard Arches and Flat Iron Square and complement established Low Line hubs located at Borough Market, Maltby Street Market, and Spa Terminus. These openings have provided enhanced access, connectivity, and public spaces, as well as improved economic prosperity through repurposing underused or empty arches.
The Low Line was coined by a local Southwark resident, and the ambitions of the project have developed through a group of initial partners including Better Bankside, Team London Bridge, Blue Bermondsey, The Arch Company and Southwark Council, who are steering the initial scoping, planning and communication.
What area does it span?
The Low Line pays homage to the railway arches spanning Bankside, London Bridge and Bermondsey, from Southwark tube station on the western edge, across to the Biscuit Factory on the eastern side which is currently undergoing development.
