[post_content] => The Bankside Christmas Gift Appeal is back for 2024 and we need your help to wrap all of the presents so that they are ready for delivery to local hostels, charities, and community organisations in time for their Christmas celebrations.
This year’s appeal will be helping 1000 people who are dealing with homelessness, struggling with their mental health, and our older neighbours in Bankside receive Christmas presents this year.
Join one of our volunteering sessions to help wrap the gifts donated by Bankside businesses. You can register for one of two sessions throughout the day:
12.30pm – 2.00pm
3.00pm – 5.00pm
All items will be provided, including scissors, tape, wrapping paper and of course the present items to be wrapped.
The sessions will be held at Arch 23 (entrance via Flat Iron Square), 45 Southwark Street, London, SE1 9HP
If you're registering as a team, you can book a maximum of eight places at each session. If you'd like to sign up a larger group, please contact kv@betterbankside.co.uk first. If the session you'd like to attend is already fully booked, please add your name to the waiting list and we’ll let you know if any slots become available.
We also need your help to make sure we have enough gifts for every local charity. Click here to see what each charity needs and purchase the items you want to donate. Everybody's generous donations will be delivered, ready for wrapping at these volunteer sessions. You might even end up wrapping what you’ve bought! Thank you for your support, with your help, we can share some Christmas cheer with people who might otherwise not get presents from anyone else this year.
To find out more about the appeal and the charities you'll be helping check out the Christmas Appeal page.

[post_content] => On Thursday 14 November spend the day volunteering at Blackfriars Settlement, cooking and serving lunch for the Positive Ageing members.
Join a team of volunteers from other Bankside businesses to help prepare and serve a two-course meal (with three main course options!) for up to 50 local older people, and get involved in their afternoon activities including bingo and karaoke.
Day Outline
9.00am-9.15am - Arrive at Blackfriars Settlement
9.15am-12.30pm - Preparing and cooking lunch
12.30pm - Lunch is served
2.00pm - Afternoon activities and cleaning up in the kitchen
4.30pm - Finish
As places are limited for this event, there is a cap of 2 people per business. This also means the group will be made up of a mix of Bankside businesses, making it a great way to get to know your neighbours!
Want to find out more about what's involved in a kitchen takeover day at Blackfriars Settlement? Last year, local business Red Ant shared their experience of volunteering with the Positive Ageing service and how their team enjoyed all the different elements of a kitchen takeover: Use your time to make a difference

[post_content] => Join fellow Bankside volunteers for a beach clean on the Thames foreshore, led by our recycling partner Recorra, to help remove plastic waste from the banks of the Thames.
You'll be surprised at the volume and variety of plastics that can be found by the river, helping to remove these will make an immediate difference to our local environment as well as wider marine ecosystems.
Meet at Gabriel's Wharf at 12:00 noon for a briefing from Recorra before heading down to the foreshore where we will work our way back towards Bankside.
Please wear suitable, closed toe shoes - we are running this event during low tide but surfaces along the Thames can be slippery. Please also dress appropriately for the weather.
High vis jackets, bin bags, litter pickers and gloves will all be provided.
Once the beach clean is completed we will send you a certificate with the amount of waste you have collected!
If you register but can no longer attend, please cancel with as much notice as possible to allow someone from the waiting list the opportunity to go in your place.

[post_content] => Generally, women in the workplace tend to be excellent team players, always willing to help out. Unfortunately, this trait and other behaviours can contribute to burnout and long-term sickness, which in January 2023 was the most common reason for economic inactivity and on the rise.
Julia Oyeleye, a natural healthcare practitioner and teacher with over 25 years’ experience, believes it is possible to be successful in your career, whilst managing the impact on your overall health.
Join the Bankside Women's Network for this breakfast event with Julia to learn how to spot the early warning signs of burnout and what you can do to support your mind and body to thrive rather than survive, using a seven-step approach with tips that actually work.
There will also be plenty of time to get to know other women who work in Bankside and foster new connections.

[post_content] => At our next Bankside Women's Network breakfast meeting we will be joined by nutrition and wellness expert Nicola Moore.
If you've ever felt confused about the many different nutrition and diet messages shared in media and books, Nicola's talk should really help you to feel a lot clearer, and importantly, less worried about understanding what the 'right' way to eat is.
Her aim is to cover the basics of what nutrition actually is, enabling you to start making connections between what you eat and how you feel. She will teach you how to make small, sensible and practical adaptations to your daily routine and diet to support metabolism, energy, focus, hormones and digestive health, so that you leave with more clarity and confidence, and an enlightened and positive approach to food and eating.
In this informal event you'll have plenty of opportunity to ask Nicola questions about food, nutrition and health, making this a powerful and unique opportunity to gain knowledge and insight that can be directly linked to helping you as an individual.
There will also be plenty of time to get to know other women who work in Bankside and foster new connections.

[post_content] => Celebrate International Women's Day 2024 at this breakfast networking event hosted by the Bankside Women's Network.
"We all have our purpose, we all have our strengths." Beyoncé
We'll be joined by Genelle Aldred, a communications consultant, to explore how confidence and communication are two things that can be the difference between those women who are like the best-kept secrets, and those who are well-recognised and known for what they can do. 'Tall poppy syndrome' can make some women not want to be seen as showing off, being too much, or drawing unwanted attention to themselves. It seems that those women who do, are either chopped down or not seen as 'nice girls'; however they are also the ones that get ahead, change the world and get the opportunities.
Or does it all just seem this way because of how society judges women who are confident and ambitious?
Genelle will explore this topic, how to worry less about the invisible "they", and learn how to communicate in a way that will help you to celebrate your strengths and purpose. She will also share some practical tips on how to be a confident and effective communicator.
There will also be plenty of time to get to know other women who work in Bankside and foster new connections.
Agenda:
8.30am - Breakfast and networking
9.00am - Genelle Aldred: How to build your confidence and spark it in others
9.30am - Q&A
9.54am - Networking
10.00am - Close

More recently she has provided commentary for News UK and the Canadian Broadcasting Company as well as written pieces for The Observer, Elle UK, The Daily Mirror and has guested on multiple podcasts talking about comms. Genelle is a regular newspaper and headlines reviewer on Sky News and BBC Radio London.
Other prominent roles include Head of Digital Strategy for an International NGO, Channel Manager and Executive Producer of a Freeview TV Channel, then Director of Communications for a boutique training agency. Genelle was Deputy Chair of Women in Journalism until early 2024.

She also delivered Keynote speeches on communication for organisations including IAG GBS, The Cabinet Office, Esure, N Brown, Girls Day School Trust, Talk Talk and more. [post_content] => Cupping coffee is The Gentlemen Baristas way to find out what flavours have developed within the coffee during roasting and resting. Every single coffee GB produce goes through this process prior to being labelled and put into bags. They complete this with their head roaster, head of production, and anyone else who wishes to join in from their teams. It does take a bit of pallet training to get to the top level of this process, imagine notes of wine, very similar. They have recently stopped putting their flavour notes on the bags of coffee as the notes differ from person to person, they rather like to provide a little information on how each coffee should taste, for example, their natural Propeller is described as "Fun, Lively & Fruity". They do however hold house cupping events with their teams, so that they can give a personal touch to the notes that their teams have gotten when tasting the coffee. They'll get onto the different processes when it comes to coffee, so you and the team can understand what the difference is!
They'll go through the whole process and they've managed to get Roosa, their head of production involved so that we've got their expert within your grasp to ask any questions. She's just got back from a trip to many coffee farms across Brazil, so if there's anything you want to know about coffee, she's all yours! Here's a link to the "SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) Flavour Wheel", so feel free to share this one, it's used commonly during a tasting process to try and pinpoint an exact note! https://notbadcoffee.com/flavor-wheel-en/This session is part of Fresh Start September, designed to turbocharge the second half of your year. This free wellbeing programme focuses on learning new skills and reaching your goals. We’d love you to join our other events and please share with your colleagues.
