A unique walking tour exploring LGBTQ+ life and history in Bankside. Join us as we uncover stories of fascinating people and places which have shaped the local queer community through the years.
Located south of the river and beyond the strict rules of the City of London, Bankside has for centuries been home to some of London’s most scandalous activity – a place famed for rowdy taverns, a once thriving sex industry and outrageous entertainment.
Winding through the web of tunnels, bridges and former industrial alleys, we discover forbidden love affairs, the birthplace of London’s very first drag performers, and some exciting new LGBTQ+ spaces for the future.
Just 10 years since the first same-sex marriage in the UK, and in this moment of increased debate and tension around queer and gender issues, Pride 2024 offers an opportunity to reflect on the many achievements of the LGBTQ+ community and the new challenges ahead.
Tour led by curator and performer Mark T Cox of Stumble London Tours.
Meeting point: Minerva Square SE1 9DF (opposite Southwark Cathedral)
End point: near Blackfriars Bridge
