Calling all Banksiders – it’s time to get blooming competitive! Following on from the success of last year’s Bankside Sunflower Challenge, we’re excited to get you all growing again, with prizes to be one for your beautiful bright blooms. Whether you are part of a Bankside business or community group, or live in the local area, you can be join the challenge.
For Bankside businesses and workers, we’re encouraging you to find spaces in or around your workplaces to plant your sunflowers, whether you’re lucky enough to have some dedicated outside space such as a balcony, roof or courtyard; but if not, we can help you identify somewhere close to your building to plant them where you can continue to keep an eye on them, water them and nurture them as they grow.
To help you look after your sunflowers, Better Bankside has toolkits that you can borrow including hand tools and watering cans, but we’re also encouraging you to reuse and repurpose what you have to hand, such as reusing plastic bottles for watering or repurposing old containers as seed and plant pots. And if you need some tips on where to start, why not take a look at our handy Sunflower challenge guide.
This year, the Bankside Sunflower Challenge will run until October and we have some exciting categories with prizes to be won for each:
- Tallest sunflower
- Most cheerful bloom (s)
- Most unusual location: in a business setting and at home
- Most innovative repurposed plant pots
- Best team effort: for businesses and community groups
- ‘Best in show’ (awarded at the judges’ discretion)
