From c.1605 to 1814, the surface of the River Thames froze over an incredible 24 times, bringing all river-based trade to a standstill. The people of Bankside, today we call them ‘Banksiders,’ responded with characteristic creativity and entrepreneurialism. An impromptu ‘Frost Fair’ was born on the ice, allowing traders to continue making money through a cornucopia of markets, pubs, entertainment and general revelry. It is even rumoured that an elephant was marched across the river alongside Blackfriars Bridge.

We brought back a reimagined Frost Fair to the area in 2023 and 2024 and we are set to continue the tradition this January.

Afternoon activities

On Saturday 31 January, from 11am until 3pm, Borough Yards will come alive with Victorian games, free outdoor performances, roaming actors, puppeteers and music. Exploring further into the area, there will also be workshops and interactive sessions organised by local creative powerhouses, as well as walking tours with Mr Londoner. Included in the workshops is an immersive art installation with artist Sammie Snow at Arch 23 where you can help draw your own Frost Fair scenes on the paper covered walls. The Arch will also host a “create your own elephant mask” with Alice Clarke, and winter crown crafting sessions with Rosie Brooks. The free events and activities will be family friendly and designed to appeal to a variety of ages.

‘After Hours,’ 7pm

Into the evening, Bankside’s characterful pubs will be hosting a variety of folk musicians playing acoustic sets.

How businesses can get involved?

If you are a creative business, can you join our afternoon programme and host a workshop?
If you are a pub or bar, can you host a folk musician in the evening?
If you are a hospitality business, can you create a Frost Fair inspired addition to your menu, or offer a special one off discount?
