In celebration of Pride Month this past June, the Bankside Urban Forest site known as “The Hope Exchange” has been revitalised, reaffirming its role as a cherished sanctuary in the heart of London. Commissioned by Better Bankside and as part the London Design Festival 2022, artist Annie Frost Nicholson was tasked in 2022 with reimagining the space.
Drawing inspiration from the pink triangle, a symbol historically associated with the oppression of LGBTQ+ communities, Nicholson transformed the Hope Exchange into a vibrant public sanctuary. The reappropriated pink triangle now stands as a beacon of resilience and pride, fostering a sense of inclusivity and acceptance.
Located on Southwark Street, the Hope Exchange offers a much-needed retreat amidst the bustling city. The refreshed design enhances its role as a democratic public space, providing shade, seating, and a gathering spot for Londoners. The renewed vibrancy of the Hope Exchange underscores its significance as a place for reflection and community in an ever-complex world.
The transformation of the Hope Exchange not only celebrates Pride but also reinforces the importance of accessible urban sanctuaries, echoing the spirit of unity and hope that defines the Bankside community.
