A new strategy, major investment wins and a strengthened sense of place define the year for Bankside.

2025 marked the beginning of a new term for Better Bankside (BB), setting in motion a vision for a stronger, greener and happier neighbourhood. Backed by ballot, the BB board, and theme groups. The team got to work co-designing the 2025-30 strategy, launched in summer with clearly defined goals and measurable impact.

Within weeks of the new term, BB secured a £252,000 grant to continue the Southwark Climate Collective, reinforcing Bankside’s role as a leader in urban sustainability. The programme has now supported over 200 businesses across the borough to decarbonise, exceeding its annual target of engaging 20 SMEs.

Bankside’s cultural programme took a playful and experimental approach, amplifying its identity as London’s other side. Highlights included an interactive public artwork during the London Design Festival and an immersive installation for The Big Draw. Frost Fair returned on 31 January with performance, workshops and live music, while a new Alchemist in Residence will explore creativity across Bankside’s streets and spaces.

Connecting business leaders remained a priority. The term launched with a networking reception at the Art Academy London, followed by the introduction of Bankside Connects debates and new sector networks for hospitality and creative industries.

Delivering on its manifesto, BB invested in new data sources to provide hyperlocal insights, alongside a growing programme of quarterly reporting. A partnership with SEEDL is also supporting workforce development, with hundreds of employees already benefiting from access to training.

Bankside’s public realm received national recognition this year, alongside continued investment in essential services such as street cleaning. Supporting the wider community remained central, with grants awarded to local organisations, record participation in Bankside Futures, and nearly 700 people supported through the Christmas gift appeal.

The foundations have also been laid for a number of major projects. A transformative scheme on America Street will begin in spring, alongside a series of artworks developed with Tate Modern. New initiatives focused on safety, innovation and local economic growth including a digital Buzz card will launch in the months ahead.

Together, these achievements mark a strong start to the new term, positioning Bankside as a leading example of how partnership working can drive economic vitality, cultural innovation and community impact.
