Using recycled and repurposed materials, these workshops will be facilitated by Mercedes Balle, a visual artist and tutor at Art Academy London. Pop in during your lunchbreak with colleagues or come along with your family to get hands on and share your ideas on how we can make Bankside a low carbon neighbourhood. The placards you make will join those created by students at Haberdashers' Borough Academy as part of our week-long exhibition exploring the impact of climate change on our neighbourhood. We’ll be running this workshop as two sessions: 12m-1pm and 1pm-2pm. Sign up now or drop in on the day. Mercedes Balle is a visual artist based in London. Mercedes reuses building materials to create art about nature. She sees the layers and layers of constructions in the cities as the biggest disconnection between the landscape and her. Balle’s practice moves through different media as she transforms again and again the building materials she gathers, trying to squeeze all their possibilities. By doing so, she wants to get involved in the circular economy with the art and question the problems of our economy in relation to the environment. Her work has been exhibited numerous times in Spain and the UK. In 2020 Mercedes was a finalist at Art Jove competition and showed at Casal Solleric in Majorca. In 2020 Balle was also nominated semifinalist at LSM Awards, and is showing until 2021 at Liberty’s offices in the Walkie Talkie building in London for that nomination. She is currently showing at Weil Studio in Majorca, Euston University Hospital in London and tutors at Art Academy London. Even though COVID restrictions have been lifted we ask that anyone feeling unwell, or displaying Covid symptoms do not attend on the day. It is also important that we continue to respect the personal boundaries and wishes of others with regards to personal space, mask wearing, and physical contact. Organised by Better Bankside and open to the public in the run up to COP26, the arch will transform into a hub for climate action, mobilising active participation from businesses and individuals from across Bankside and London. Join Better Bankside’s Urban Forest Manager Valerie Beirne for a breakfast ramble across Bankside exploring how Better Bankside is working to improve the resilience of the neighbourhood through its Bankside Urban Forest and Low Line placemaking strategies. The walk will visit a range of streets and spaces that have been transformed over the years by Better Bankside and its partners, and will discuss why making space for nature in an inner city urban neigbourhood like Bankside is critical to the future resilience of the area.

This event is part of Bankside 2025: pioneering a low carbon neighbourhood, a programme of activity taking place from 25-29 October 2021 at a converted Southwark Street railway arch. Organised by Better Bankside and open to the public in the run up to COP26, the arch will transform into a hub for climate action, mobilising active participation from businesses and individuals from across Bankside and London.

Join our Urban Gardener Georgia for a special event with Divya from Fruity Walks who will lead us on a tour of the fruit trees and berry bushes of Bankside and Lambeth.

Divya is one of the Southwark Rangers for London National Park City (LNPC), an organisation creating action to make London greener, healthier and wilder. By trade, Divya is a sustainable design engineer working on the built environment, but in her free time, she is passionate about urban foraging, specifically finding fruit trees in the city. Volunteering with LNPC, she hopes to encourage public parks to plant more fruit trees, clearly labeled to aid the community in identifying them.

Divya hopes to publish her own fruit-tree map soon, but in the meantime, you can follow her discoveries on Instagram @fruitywalks

We will be starting the walk at Webber Street (by the junction with Lancaster Street) to head towards the Imperial War Museum before looping back to Bankside. Full joining details will be sent to registered participants a couple of days before the event.

Please remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water with you. In case of extreme weather we will postpone, so please check your inbox a few hours before the event. Spaces are limited so please let us as soon as possible if you need to cancel to allow another person to attend.

Even though COVID restrictions have been lifted we ask that anyone feeling unwell, or displaying Covid symptoms do not attend on the day. It is also important that we continue to respect the personal boundaries and wishes of others with regards to personal space, mask wearing, and physical contact.

Plastics are a problem. Only 9% of plastic ever made has been recycled. Plastic waste consistently makes up over 60% of litter found on UK beaches and the issue with plastic waste is that is never disappears, it just gets smaller and smaller.

Join other Bankside volunteers for this lunchtime clean up on the Thames foreshore, led by Paper Round, to help remove plastic waste from the banks of the Thames. You'll be surprised at the volume and variety of plastics that can be found by the river, helping to remove these will make an immediate difference to our local environment as well as wider marine ecosystems.

Meet at Gabriel's Wharf at 11.45am for a briefing from Paper Round before heading down to the foreshore where we will work our way back to Bankside.

Please wear suitable, closed toe shoes - we are running this event during low tide but surfaces along the Thames can be slippery. Please also dress appropriately for the weather.

High vis jackets, bin bags, litter pickers and gloves will all be provided.

If you register but can no longer attend, please cancel with as much notice as possible to allow someone from the waiting list the opportunity to go in your place.
