The Frost Fair returns to Bankside!

Did you know that Bankside had its own Frost Fair?

The Frost Fair celebrated the phenomenon of the Thames freezing over in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries between Blackfriars and London Bridge. Instead of being disheartened, the Banksiders of the time saw it as an opportunity, creating a winter festival with weird and wonderful events, activities and food. Bargemen became tour guides and people became mini entrepreneurs selling keepsakes, purl and memorabilia. The last Frost Fair was in 1814 when an elephant was walked across the ice from north to south of the river!

Along with a number of key partners from the area, our plan is to bring the Frost Fair back to Bankside this winter!

We need YOU to help us turn Bankside into THE area to be this December and January with food, drink, events, enlivenment and experiences all related to the historic Frost Fair.

It is totally free to be part of the Frost Fair (which will run from 1 Dec – 31 Jan) and we will provide businesses with all the brand assets required, all you have to do is tell the Frost Fair story through your own words in your own way, such as:

– Themed cocktails, menu items and experiences
– FREEZE drink prices at Happy Hour
– Participatory experiences such as beer tastings & cocktail mixology sessions
– Special hot drinks and offers
– Frost Fair- themed club and music nights
– Micro-theatre or roaming performance
– Participatory experiences such as Drag Bingo
– Craft and art workshops

….or anything else you would like to do!

In return, we will add you to our programme and promote you throughout December and January to drive footfall and spend, and bring the Frost Fair back to Bankside where it belongs! As well as your enlivenment/activities/entertainment, we will be freezing the Thames (using AR!), bringing an eerie elephant to the streets and creating a special augmented reality art trail.
