The Bankside Urban Forest is a long-term project to create a new type of greening initiative in central London. The Lowline is an ambitious project that aims to transform the railway viaducts in Southwark into a vibrant, green space for the local community. Both projects are part of a wider effort to create a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive city. At this event, you will have the opportunity to hear from various designers and experts on the projects' evolution, including the challenges they have faced, the progress made so far, and the vision for the future. You will also be able to ask questions and participate in discussions with other attendees. The event will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about Bankside’s Urban Forest and Lowline and to meet like-minded people who are passionate about creating a better environment for all. We hope you can join us for what promises to be a fascinating and inspiring evening. We look forward to seeing you there! Take a trip out to Recorra's fantastic new facilities to see what happens after we fill up our recycle bins.

Here's Recorra's info about the site and what you'll see there -

All the materials we collect for recycling are transported back to our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Essex. This enables us to sort recycling to the highest standards in-house, retaining quality in the recycling chain. In 2019, we invested over £2.5m in upgrading our MRF. We have installed optical sorting facilities, magnetic sorters, eddy currents and a ballastic separator to maximise the amount of recycling sorted. This upgrade makes ours the largest commercial MRF in London.

There are two tours taking place, click the links below to sign up for a time slot:

9.15 am - 11.00 am – Book Now 10.00 am - 11.45 am - Book Now

One excellent way to feel better inside and better connected is by volunteering to make a difference to your environment.

Plastics are a problem on the Thames. Plastic waste consistently makes up over 60% of litter found on UK beaches and the issue with plastic waste is that it never disappears, it just gets smaller and smaller.

Join other Bankside volunteers for this morning clean-up on the Thames foreshore, led by Recorra, to help remove plastic waste from the banks of the Thames. You'll be surprised at the volume and variety of plastics that can be found by the river, helping to remove these will make an immediate difference to our local environment as well as wider marine ecosystems.

Meet at Gabriel's Wharf at 10.00am for a briefing from Recorra before heading down to the foreshore where we will work our way back to Bankside.

Please wear suitable, closed-toe shoes - we are running this event during low tide but surfaces along the Thames can be slippery. Please also dress appropriately for the weather.

High vis jackets, bin bags, litter pickers, and gloves will all be provided.

If you register but can no longer attend, please cancel with as much notice as possible to allow someone from the waiting list the opportunity to go in your place.

Click the register button above and use the password Bankside to get signed up for free.

Frozen - Tales from the Frost Fair

Just six months before the Battle of Waterloo, London experienced its last ever frost fair. A series of mini ice-ages, that kicked off in the late 7th century, caused the Thames and even the sea to freeze over.  The thick ice brought river traffic and business to a standstill. But threats create opportunities and frost fairs were devised by entrepreneurial locals from 1600 onwards.  Designed to appeal to the senses, they became the epicentre of bawdy and surprising entertainment, food, drink - and even hunting on ice!  Nobody realised that 1814 would see the final frost fair,  a changing climate, on the very eve of the industrial revolution, meant the River would never freeze again.   Join Blue Badge guide Mr Londoner to explore all the fun of the fair and draw some parallels with our own times.   This tour is part of the Frost Fair which Better Bankside is running across December and January.
