Better Bankside is working in partnership with Southwark Council, Arch Co, and Low Line Commons to redevelop America Street, creating a new space for Banksiders. The project will create meaningful ways for people to connect and help foster an inclusive neighbourhood that businesses, employees, residents and visitors are proud of.

Sustainability is key  for all partners. Southwark Council’s “Streets for People” goal is to reduce air pollution and make London a cleaner, greener, and healthier city for everyone. By creating more pedestrian-friendly, “healthy” streets, the aim is to improve air quality whilst increasing awareness and uptake of active travel along the Low Line. The strategy behind the LowLine is to repurpose and activate underused space, both in the arches and adjacent urban realm, thus creating new opportunities for new businesses, innovation, culture, connection and biodiversity.

The project will focus on the following project objectives:

  • Create a more welcoming and safer space for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Benefit businesses through increased footfall
  • Introduce new greening to support adaptation and resilience
  • Improve air quality and monitoring

The project aims to deliver a range of physical improvements to the public realm including:

  • Improved walking
  • Improved cycling
  • Improved greening
  • New seating areas
  • Improved drainage
  • Air quality monitoring
  • New businesses including F&B and wellness

The America Street project ties in clearly with two of Better Bankside’s 5-year plan goals: Namely Bankside will be a neighbourhood resilient to the impacts of climate change and Bankside will be a safe and welcoming neighbourhood with a unique sense of belonging.

The planting in the project aligns with our sustainability plans to create new green spaces in Bankside to enhance the climate resilience of our neighbourhood. The pedestrianisation, improved lighting and new businesses units on America Street align with Better Bankside’s plans to transform public spaces and create opportunities for connection. The project and collaborative events enhances the visitor experience, will also allow more opportunities for residents, workers and businesses to actively participate in the neighbourhood.

The new units on America Street currently include Nova Gym, Pace Club and Grand Central Bar.
